PAINTING and DRAWING COURSE IN SICILY

This course will suit a cross-section of painters ,who would like to explore the underpinnings and processes of drawing and painting, from complete beginners to the more experienced.

Emphasis will be placed on fostering a visual language, skills and methods , risk taking and creative thinking.

The principal large scale works, in oil or acrylic, will develop from sketches and drawings. The process of drawing will involve analytical observation, exploration, planning and recording.

Different drawing media will be investigated using a range of approaches from the observational to the abstract.

Painters will explore light and tone, materials and surface, movement and line, composition, measurement and proportion and drawing systems such as perspective.

A variety of drawing techniques and materials including pencil, ink, white chalk, willow and compressed charcoal will be used.

The knowledge acquired through the practice of drawing, will assist the progression of painting.

Paintings made directly from the environment, objects and secondary sources will cover both expressionist and realist styles.

Colour and composition will be given special attention.

It is our aim to ensure that guests leave the course with a set of criteria and skills which enable them, not only to explore ways of representing the environment, but to express themselves with confidence.

Materials and equipment provided:

Field easels.
A1 and A2 drawing boards.
Oil and acrylic paints and painting mediums.
Brushes, cloths and sponges
A1 cartridge and A1 water colour paper
A3 canvas boards
Charcoal, graphite, white chalk, Indian ink, pens and pencils.
Sketchbooks
Apple Mac computer with Photoshop.
Reference material from other artists, times and cultures.

To Bring With You

Digital camera.
Watercolours and watercolour brushes or water-soluble coloured pencils (For sketches).
Large natural sponge.
Apron or old shirt

Please note the course timetable will follow the typical day at Art Toscana with morning and afternoon sessions. Wednesday is the free day.
